THIS WEEK’S VERSES:
“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” (James 3:13-18)
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” (James 1:5)
A MESSAGE FROM SARA:
Grandpa was one of my favorite people in the world. I was only 17 when he passed away which seems like forever ago — and yet just like yesterday. Even this many years later, I can remember exactly where I was when my parents called and told me to come home because Grandpa died.
It’s hard to process…all of those feelings and emotions when you first get the news. In fact, I don’t think I really processed it until after the funeral. When I was really young he would put my small, baby-soft hand in his strong, worn hand and tell me how young my hand looked compared to his. He was the only grandparent to spank me (I deserved it) and would also feed us crazy food from his garden like turnips (which I loved).
But the one thing that stood out to me about Grandpa more than anything was his wisdom and passion for God.
Have you ever known someone that you look at and just know that they are wise? I’m not talking about smart or knowledgeable…I’m talking about having a spirit of understanding and discernment…an ability to see things others don’t. That was Grandpa; and I knew I wanted some of that wisdom. So from a very young age, I used to pray that God would give me just an ounce of the wisdom that Grandpa had. His ability to understand God’s word and God’s love forever left an impression on me. And although I miss him terribly, I am grateful for the 17 years of influence he had in my life.
Why would anyone want wisdom? What does that even look like? For me, wisdom is a better understanding of God and His purpose for life. And God knew that wisdom would give that to us which is why He told us to ask for it.
At Be Still Be Free, the entire point of our mission is for women’s minds to be elevated through inspiring words and truthfulness. Putting the good in and getting the good out basically. And nothing could say it better than an article I found that was excerpted from a book by Nancy Missler, Be Ye Transformed:
“Transformation is simply an exchange of life. It means we are showing forth and manifesting Christ’s Life instead of our own. Scripture tells us that the only way we can do this is by the constant renewing of our minds; putting off the garbage in our own thinking and putting on the Mind of Christ. The goal of our instruction is not to have more ‘head knowledge,’ but to have God’s Wisdom (His Word) in our hearts become a living reality in our lives.”
At BE, we often say our thoughts determine our beliefs which determine our behaviors. Wisdom helps us at the root of this progression…our thoughts. And James 3:13-18 spells out exactly what a person of wisdom looks like.
I still pray for wisdom and understanding, because I really believe it is a gift that can transform my life from the inside out. How many of you might ask for the same thing or perhaps have not even thought of asking for wisdom? We serve an almighty God that desires to answer our prayers.
Please join me as my sister in Christ in asking God for wisdom and understanding, so that through those gifts, we might live in freedom and elevate our minds in Christ!

Wisdom isn’t having knowledge, but discernment. It’s seeing into things in ways others can’t. (click to tweet)
PRACTICAL APPLICATION:
1. Recommit your time with God daily in His word. We cannot have the knowledge if we do not do the studying. And wisdom without knowledge and understanding will not yield what the spirit of wisdom is in the mind of Christ.
2. Pray to God, request of Him, to have wisdom. Make a circle around this, be persistent. Ask the Lord to give you the eyes of Christ.
